**RATIOS AND RATES UNIT**

Welcome mentors and teachers to the Ratios and Rates Unit. This Unit is designed to provide a series of lesson plans that will help your students develop an understanding of ratios and rates. This unit is geared towards students in grades 6-8 but students in grades 9-12 who struggle with algebraic concepts would also benefit from this unit.

The objectives for this unit are:

- To understand and use ratio language to describe ratio relationships
- To use ratio reasoning to solve problems
- To use ratio reasoning to solve problems involving scale

After completing this unit, your students will be able to do the following:

- Compare two quantities using ratios written in words (for every 1 mentor there are 20 students) or in numerical form (1:20, 1/20, 1 to 20)
- Identify part to part ratios, part to whole ratios, and ratios comparing two different things
- Use pictures, equivalent ratios, unit rates, rate tables and graphs to solve problems
- Create a scale drawing when given an original drawing and a scale factor
- Solve problems involving scale in more than one way, including using pictures, equivalent ratios, rate tables, graphs and equations
